PyETR: An Open-Source Python package for the Erotetic Theory of Reason

The PyETR project provides an open-source Python package that models the operations of the Erotetic Theory of Reason (ETR), as presented in Reason and Inquiry (Oxford University Press 2023). ETR proposes that human reason is structured around seeking “erotetic equilibrium” — a state in which judgments are stable and resilient to further questioning. PyETR seeks to bring this theory to life computationally, allowing researchers to simulate ETR’s reasoning and decision processes and investigate the mechanisms behind both rational and fallacious judgments. The package enables the analysis of a wide range of reasoning, judgment, and decision patterns documented in empirical studies and lays the groundwork for larger-scale exploration and applications in AI and cognitive modelling.
